Correlation Equations for Dissolution Heat and Mass Transport in an Aluminum–Steel System

The problem of dissolution heat and mass transport on a vertical steel substrate submerged in a pool of aluminum-steel solution at various ambient temperatures and concentrations is studied theoretically. The problem is formulated using the Boussinesq approximation and the governing system is solved using a combined analytical-numerical technique. It is found that both the local and the overall rates of dissolution can conveniently be described by a single dissolution constant. The latter can be correlated very nicely to three controlling parameters of the system, namely, the degree of saturation of the ambient pool, the thermal buoyancy, and the saturated concentration at the dissolution front.
