Abstract—Acoustic waves for underwater data transmission incur narrow channel bandwidth, low transmission rate and long propagation delay that must be taken into account in the media access control (MAC) protocol design. To improve the network throughput, it is necessary to enable temporal and spatial reuse through concurrent transmission as much as possible. Successive interference cancellation (SIC) allows a receiver to receive more than one signal at the same time that provides a new way to improve the channel reuse rate for underwater acoustic networks (UANs). We propose a joint temporal and spatial reuse MAC protocol for UANs exploiting successive interference cancellation, named TSR-SIC. It firstly presents the interference model for the handshaking-based MAC protocol in UANs exploiting SIC. Moreover, nodes supporting SIC can initiate multiple current handshaking processes with their neighbors achieving temporal reuse and spatial reuse to maximize network throughput. Our simulation results show that the network throughput of TSR-SIC protocol improves the throughput performance at least 30% compared to the existing other handshaking-based MAC protocols when applied to a long-range underwater acoustic network supporting SIC.
