Dr. William (Mickey) Haynes
1943–2016

Dr. William (Mickey) Haynes, who passed away at his home on 25 February 2016, was a prominent leader in the global thermophysics community. Most of Mickey’s professional career was spent at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) until his retirement in 2003. Nevertheless, he remained an active scientist until shortly before his death.

His former NIST colleagues, Drs. Dan Friend, Thomas Bruno and Chris Muzny have written an extensive obituary to honour the life of Mickey Haynes, which is published in this issue. We thank them for recalling the many facets of Mickey’s life.

As editors, we would like to take the opportunity to add some personal remarks. We maintained a close and friendly relation with Mickey, who was, among other things, the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Thermophysics. We met him and his wife on many occasions, including the European Conference on Thermophysical Properties in Porto, where he received the 2014 ECTP Lifetime Achievements Award.

With his death we lose a good friend and colleague. To his wife and family, we wish to express our sincere condolences. The thermophysics community will always remember Mickey Haynes as an iconic character.
