This is a special issue dedicated to Professor Ivo G. Rosenberg on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

Prof. Rosenberg was born in Brno, the Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia at that time) on December 13, 1934. After studying at Masaryk University in Brno and obtaining Ph.D. degree from J. E. Purkynĕ University also in Brno, he started his career at Polytechnic VUT Brno (1958-1968). From 1966 to 1968 he was also engaged in University of Khartoum in Sudan. Prof. Rosenberg and his family moved to Canada in 1968 and there he served as a professor at two universities: University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon (1968-1971) and University of Montreal (1971-2011). Most of his academic activities were done in Montreal.

In 2006, Prof. Rosenberg received Honorary Doctor from Technical University of Vienna (Austria) and, in 2013, Doctor Honorary Causae from Rostock University (Germany).

For more than half a century Prof. Rosenberg has been a highly active and productive mathematician. The number of his publications exceeds 250, including celebrated monumental works and pioneering works. The number of his coauthors counts more than 55. His works always contain the fruits of new ideas and deep insight.

Prof. Rosenberg is also known as a man of gentle and broad heart. He is a man of friendship and extreme kindness. Many of his former students, colleagues and friends greatly benefit from his guidance, encouragement and friendship that has been shown to them for many decades…
