A Q-switched Th-doped fibre laser (TDFL) operated at central wavelength of 1941 nm was realized by using a CdSe coating onto a side-polished fibre as the saturable absorber (SA). The self-starting Q-switching occurred when the pump power reached 692 mW and continued until a pump power of 876 mW was reached. The starting repetition rate of 27.77 kHz increase to 56.43 kHz when the pump power reach 876 mW. The maximum pulse energy was 0.1143 μJ and the average output power was 6.45 mW. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the spectrum was obtained at around 45 dB.
