A novel all-optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique based on superstructured fibre Bragg gratings (SFBGs) is demonstrated. The design of the phase-shifted SFBGs based on fibre direct current (DC) refractive index change for discrete Fourier transform (DFT)/inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) is researched in detail. An 8 × 10 Gbps on-off keying (OOK) and an 8 × 20 Gbps differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) modulated all-optical OFDM transmission system was obtained. The system performance with different optical cyclic postfix (OCP) length and received power were investigated. With optimal design the 8 × 10 Gbps OOK and 8 × 20 Gbps DQPSK modulated all-optical OFDM signal successfully transmitted over 50 and 20 km single-mode fibre (SMF) link, respectively, without any compensation.
