The feasibility of FeCoCrNiCu high-entropy alloy (HEA) sheet as the interlayer for fibre laser welded 6082-T6 Al alloy and 301L stainless steel in a butt joint configuration was studied. The main purpose of using HEA as the interlayer was to use its high entropy effect to restrain the growth of the intermetallic compound (IMC) layer. The thickness of the IMCs layer was controlled from 97 to 5 μm as the laser offset was increased from 0.2 to 0.6 mm. When the laser offset was increased to 0.6 mm the thickness of IMCs layer was the thinnest and the tensile strength reached 59 MPa. Adjacent to the weld zone (WZ), there was a relatively thin and regular β-Al (Fe, Cr) layer and needle-like α-Al+θ-Fe4Al13 phases dispersed in the 6082-T6 Al alloy side.
