Subir Biswas, Md Mahbubul Haque and Jelena Misic

Security and Privacy issues are among the most important concerns for Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) users, and a number of papers have proposed various implementation schemes for one or the other, or both, in recent years. In this paper, we survey the existing work on security and privacy in VANETs from several distinct viewpoints, and classify them into distinct categories based on their cryptographic techniques, implementation methodologies, functionality, and other important characteristics. We identify the pertinent characteristics of different approaches and highlight their comparative advantages and disadvantages.

Keywords: Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), security, privacy, authentication, anonymity, group signatures, PKI.
