PREFACE
18th International Symposium on Transport Phenomena (ISTP-18)

This special issue consists of manuscripts selected from those contributed to the 18th International Symposium on Transport Phenomena (ISTP-18) held in Daejeon, Korea, from 27 to 30, August, 2007. ISTP-18 was organized by Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers (KSME) under the auspices of the Pacific Center of Thermal-Fluids Engineering with an aim to provide a forum for scientists and engineers to exchange new ideas and discuss future directions in the area of transport phenomena. Since the launch of the 1st symposium held in Honolulu in 1985, ISTP has been held in various countries all over the world. Korea hosted ISTP-6 (1993) in Seoul, and ISTP-18 in Daejeon.

This special issue has been initiated in collaboration between the editorial committee of International Journal of Transport Phenomena and the organizing committee of ISTP-18. Due to the limit of allocated pages for the special issue, only 23 manuscripts among 86 were selected for publication. These manuscripts are published in two separate volumes. During the reviewing process, we noted that many outstanding manuscripts had to be excluded due to the page limitation, and thus, those excluded manuscripts are welcome to be submitted to the Journal for further consideration in a regular issue.

The topics dealt in the present special issue cover various forms of transport phenomena in fluid flow, heat and mass transfer. The included papers also cover the current research trends in multi-disciplinary areas including entropy generation in turbo-machinery, heat and mass transfer in unsaturated porous media, pulse laser ablation of titanium, droplet-wall impingement, particle deposition in a lung airway, ionic migration by eletrophoresis, microfluidics, self-rewetting fluids, fuel cell modeling, to name a few.

We gratefully acknowledge the authors for their contribution and support throughout the publication process, and the reviewers for their valuable time and efforts. The organizing committee of ISTP-18 lead by chairmen, Prof. Sang Young Lee from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Prof. Joon Sik Lee from Seoul National University should greatly be acknowledged for their invaluable contribution to ISTP-18 and to this special issue. Finally, Prof. Sung Jin Kim from KAIST, who has been the technical program chair of ISTP-18, deserves sincere thanks for his efforts for the initiation of the special issue and for his continuous self-sacrificing support during the whole process of this special issue.
