Energy conservation remains a central design constraint in battery-powered wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This study extends the previously proposed Cluster-Based Unified Sensor MAC (CBU-SMAC) by evaluating its performance against S-MAC and IEEE 802.15.4 beacon-enabled and non-beacon modes in NS-3. Under the specified one-hop simulation conditions, CBU-SMAC generally reduced the energy consumption and achieved a higher energy efficiency than the IEEE 802.15.4 configurations. Across the paired energy efficiency observations, CBU-SMAC did not differ significantly from S-MAC after statistical testing (p = 0.188), but it differed significantly from the non-beacon and beacon configurations. The results indicate that cluster-level schedule unification can reduce synchronisation and idle listening costs under the evaluated conditions. The findings are bounded by the fixed duty cycle, homogeneous nodes, one-hop communication, and simulation-only evaluation, motivating future adaptive and multi-hop validation.
