Throughput and Energy Efficiency in Cooperative Relay based MAC protocols of IEEE 802.11 Networks

Abstract-Cooperative Medium Access Control (CMAC) protocols have emerged as an effective method of improving the performance of wireless networks. The CMAC protocols can enhance the wireless networks in different metrics such as throughput, delay, energy and fairness. To achieve network performance improvement in every metric, the relay selection algorithms should be designed based on the protocol objectives. In this paper, two protocols are proposed in IEEE 802.11 networks which implement a multi-objective approach including the throughput and energy. Using the overhearing and control packets exchange between nodes, the decision parameters are collected and relay selection metrics are defined. The proposed protocols are the Maximum Energy to Delay ratio Cooperative Medium Access Control (ME2D-CMAC) and Fair Energy to Delay ratio Cooperative Medium Access Control (FE2D-CMAC). The first one selects one relay providing the maximum value of energy to delay ratio while the second one employs a multiple relay selection to exploit the whole resources fairly. The simulation results of the ns-3 network simulator demonstrate that a fair approach can provide more improvements in terms of network lifetime, throughput and traffic exchange.
