Laser Surface Texturing of 304 Stainless Steel

Laser surface texturing (LST) is recently used to modify the wettability and tribological properties of the target material surfaces by creating controllable and precise pattern geometries. This study reports the experimental results of the LST to produce uniform micro dimples on the 304 stainless steel surfaces. The effects of process parameters such as laser fluence, and pulse number on the creation of micro dimples were investigated. The micro texture surfaces were characterized using optical microscope and field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The results showed formation of a micro dimples with good repeatability. No micro cracks were observed for all specimens under the operating conditions. The depth of the micro dimples strongly depends on the associated effects of laser fluence and the number of pulses.
