The influence of Sodium ions on the optical properties for active glass laser medium with matrix Nd2O3-B2O3-ZnO

Glasses with chemical composition (x)Na2O.(58-x)B2O3.40ZnO.2Nd2O3 (where x = 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25) were synthesized by conventional casting method in a bulk form. The effect of sodium ions content on density has been measured by the conventional Archimedes method, using toluene as immersing liquid with a calculation to the molar volume, the investigation found that the density increases with increasing the sodium oxide contents with a vise versa to the molar volume. The investigation of the glass state has been measured by using XRD technique, the observation of that result shows no natural broadening peaks that forming crystals, which prove the systems are completely in glass state. Optical absorption, refractive index and some optical properties has been measured and calculated in a wide wavelength range were carried out. Further to this, some initial theoretical investigation of the problems associated with the glass matrix will be carried out.
